Bob Doyle: "An Irish man's fight against fascism"

Escribo estas líneas en homenaje a un valeroso brigadista recientemente fallecido: Bob Doyle. Siempre imbatible, dispuesto a seguir luchando por sus ideales, parece increíble que nos haya abandonado. No hace mucho pudimos oir su discurso en la marcha memorial organizada por la AABI en el 71 aniversario de la marcha del Jarama, discurso que transcribo aquí:

It is right and proper that today we remember the struggles of the past, and that we honour those that sacrificed their lives in the fight for freedom and justice. Here in Spain, and later throughout Europe many lives were sacrificed in order to defeat fascism, an ugly manifestation of capitalism. While we remember the past let us not forget that capitalism has not been defeated. The system that puts private profit above public welfare is now more powerful than ever. A corporation like the American supermarket chain Walmart has a turnover greater than the economies of many countries. Their power and wealth allows them to pursue profit without regard to human suffering.
Around the world we see the mass of the earth's population without health or education, without sufficient food to eat or clean water to drink. The villages in Nigeria where corporations like Shell Oil are extracting record profits are heavily polluted and women must undergo caesarean operations without anaesthetics.
The enemy now has sophisticated public relations and must be opposed by different means than in the past. Today we must organise and educate and make sure that the truth about the world we live in is heard and understood. This is the best way to remember and honour those who fought and died in the past. La lucha continúa.

71 ANIVERSARIO DELA BATALLA DEL JARAMAMadrid-Morata de Tajuña 1937-2008 Resulta muy justo que recordemos hoy las luchas del pasado, y que honremos a aquellos que dieron sus vidas en el combate por la libertad y la justicia. Aquí en España, y más tarde en toda Europa, mucha gente ofrendó sus vidas para derrotar el fascismo, esa fea expresión del capitalismo. Recordemos el pasado, sí, pero no olvidemos que el capitalismo aún no ha sido derrotado; este sistema, que coloca el beneficio privado por encima del bienestar público, es ahora más fuerte que nunca.Pongamos algunos ejemplos. La cadena americana de supermercados Walmart es más poderosa y rica que las economías de muchos países. Su poder y riqueza permite a ésta y otras muchas empresas hacer grandes ganancias sin importarles en absoluto el sufrimiento humano que provocan.En todo el mundo vemos grandes masas de población sin atención sanitaria ni educación, sin alimentos ni agua potable. Las aldeas de Nigeria, donde la compañía petrolera Shell obtiene ganancias extraordinarias, sufren una intensa contaminación, mientras que a las mujeres les practican cesáreas sin anestesia. El enemigo tiene ahora relaciones públicas muy sofisticadas y tenemos que cambiar los métodos para hacerle frente. Debemos hacer posible que la verdad, nuestra visión del mundo en que vivimos, llega a la gente de forma comprensible. Esta es la mejor manera de recordar y honrar a aquellos que en el pasado lucharon y dieron su vida por un mundo mejor.
La lucha continúa.
